Nick Names

Some of you may know that I've been picky about nick names my kids might be called. For instance, Dominic is not, and will never be "Dom" if I have anything to say about it. And Natalie will never be "Nat" or "Nattie". Since Caroline is already Cara I think (hope) I'm safe on that front.

What I didn't anticipate was my three year old assigning unapproved nick names to his sisters. Cara is "The Fish" and Natalie is "Izzy".

Dominic has loved that Cat in the Hat on PBS Kids for quite sometime now, but he recently assigned parts to everyone in the family...
  • Dominic is the Cat
  • Dad is Nick
  • Natalie is Sally
  • Mom is the Mom
  • Monkey and Ah-ah (the stuffed monkeys) are Things 1 and 2
  • and poor Cara, she's the fish.
Our "parts" in the Cat in the Hat game usually only matter when Dominic is playing. But for some reason, Cara is always called the Fish. When I tell Dominic to say goodnight, or apologize for knocking her down, he replies "Goodnight Fish!" or "Sorry Fish". Yesterday I said something about Cara, and Dominic says "No, mom. Not Cara, the Fish". What a crack-up. Maybe Cara will turn out to be a great swimmer.

Izzy is a recent development. Apparently from Jake and the Neverland Pirates. But today, whenever Dominic has talked about Natalie, she's been called Izzy. Just now, as Natalie is waking up from her nap, Dominic is saying, "I think Izzy's awake. Izzy hears us, Let's go get Izzy!" Unfortunately, Natalie is old enough to mind and she replies, "No, I'm just Natalie" in a screaming voice. At least I can count on her to ward off the attempts to nick name her Nat or Nattie when she gets to school!

Just One Question

Is it Spring yet?

Not too long ago Kirk and I had a discussion about situations where "yearn" is an appropriate term. Well, I am yearning for some sun, warm weather, flowers and greenery!
